Whats your name and where do you currently live?
Derrick Fast and I live in Vancouver, BC. Chinatown.
What was the original spark that got you into art?
It was my older brother for sure, he was really good at drawing so Id look through his sketchbooks and copy his drawings. He also was the one that got me into skateboarding.
When you first started making art did you ever think one day you would start tattooing?
Ive been drawing as long as I can remember. Tattooing was never my plan, I just started getting tattooed when I was young and got hooked.
How long have you been tattooing for?
About 5 years now!
Do you have any training/schooling or are you completely self taught ?
You could say Im self taught, although thats not the ideal way to go about it, I had read tons of books about tattoos and drew endless designs. Id get tattooed myself as much as possible and practice tiny little tattoos on myself and close homies.
How would you describe your style of tattooing and what are some of your favourite things to tattoo?
Id say my tattoos are fairly traditional, bold and to the point for the most part. I love tattooing cartoons, skulls, devils. Whatever, I like it all.
Are there any similarities youve noticed in being an artist compared to a skateboarder?
I guess just that in both you can kind of do whatever you want.
Where do you draw most of your inspiration from?
Im definitely inspired from my friends and other tattooers. I like old Japanese paintings, Tibetan art, old cartoons and other older tattooers from back in the day.
Do you have any funny tattoo stories?
Haha nothing too crazy yet! I haven’t misspelt anything yet.
What are some ways you over come pesky creative blocks?
I just try not to overthink anything, if Im having a hard time with something it usually means I have to start over.
Any advice for people wanting to start making art/ becoming an artist?
I think that its important to try out a bunch of mediums and see what feels right. Paint, silkscreen, make prints, ceramics etc
What are some goals you have for the future?
Id love to work and travel around, overseas would be great
Where can people find more of your work?
Instagram is the easiest way to go about it @derrickfast
