It’s a question almost every skater who has spent any time traveling around Canada in the past decade has asked themselves, “Why doesn’t Toronto have a good DIY park like Montreal and Vancouver?”
It’s something that filmmaker Nicky Young asked himself about 5 years ago after visiting Vancouver and being in awe of Leeside Skatepark for the first time, and it’s taken him since then to come up with some sort of an answer.
“Taking Space” is a documentary about the DIY skatepark movement in Toronto and Canada at large that ties in the stories of Lee Matasi and Justin Bokma, two infamous Canadian skateboarders who were both killed by gun violence.
